Your private guide will pick you up from your hotel and take you on a day tour of the South Shore.
Today you will travel the South Shore to the charming village of Vik. Situated on the southern coastline of Iceland, today is ideal for nature lovers or anyone who wants to experience something truly special. The area from the South Shore to Vik is one of the country’s most scenic regions, with wide open spaces dotted with traditional villages and tall, beautiful cliffs hosting thriving native bird life.
The first stop of the day will be at the Lava Centre Interactive Exhibition. The Lava Centre is an interactive, high-tech educational exhibition depicting volcanic activity, earthquakes and the creation of Iceland over millions of years. Examine the various volcanos—eruptions and lava flows, volcanic and rift systems, faults and glacial floods that make Iceland a showcase of volcanism. The centre introduces the Katla Geopark plus Iceland’s elaborate monitoring system for surveying volcanos and earthquake zones.
The South Shore to Vik region has some of the best scenery in Iceland. Along with experiencing a profound sense of space and scale, visitors get to enjoy beautiful waterfalls, view of glaciers and Icelandic saga places. Along the way we’ll take you to a number of famous attractions, including the majestic and much-photographed Skógafoss waterfall, with its 60 m (196 ft.) drop and the stunning Reynisfjara black beach sand and basalt columns. On the way there is also a viewing point of Eyjafjallajokull (weather permitted if there is a view of the glacier) and the gorgeous 60m (196 ft.) high Seljalandsfoss waterfall, which is unique since you can walk behind it (not possible during winter due to ice).
Inclusions:
– Day tour with local driver/guide.
– Lunch.
– Admission to the Lava Centre.
Throughout our Reykjanes tour, we travel through varying landscapes, including muddy soils and moss-covered lava fields. This region is well-loved and full of fantastic attractions, including the iconic Blue Lagoon that’s fed by local hot springs. The wider peninsula region is marked by active volcanism, with large lava fields providing stark but majestic scenery.
We’ll visit Gunnuhver geothermal sight, Reykjanesviti lighthouse, and the bridge between two continents. This is where the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates are continuously drifting apart due to great forces under the gaping rifts.
You will drive alongside Kleifarvatn Lake. Marvel at the mountains and lava surrounding the lake and stop for an amazing 360-degree view. Stop at the Seltun geothermal area in Krisuvik, and Grænavatn (or Green Lake), a volcanic crater that got its name from its unusual green color.
Before heading back to Reykjavik you will stop at the Blue Lagoon for a nice soak for around 2 hours.
The Blue Lagoon is recognised as one of National Geographic’s 25 “wonders of the world” and is a unique source of geothermal seawater. The Blue Lagoon is 37°-40°C (98°- 104°F). The temperature is the same all year round – summer and winter.
